Iain Macwhirter is the award-winning political commentator for The Herald Newspaper and The Sunday Herald, which he helped launch in 1999 after returning to Scotland from Westminster. The Sunday Herald was the first quality Sunday newspaper launch for 20 years and he was assured it would last all of 6 months.
He had been a card-carrying member of the Westminster Lobby for ten years and was reported to the Sergeant at Arms for writing about MPs expenses in 1997. In a long career he has also written weekly op-ed columns for The Observer, The New Statesman, The Scotsman and The Big Issue. He is a frequent contributor to The Guardian, and many other publications. He also writes a monthly column for Public Finance.
Iain has had numerous award nominations and accolades. He was Political Journalist of the Year, 2000 and Features Journalist of the Year in 2010. From 2003-6 he was external examiner for the post graduate journalism studies course at Strathclyde University.
